Abstract:

In the fall of 1999, the Office of Academic Affiliations of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Veterans Health Administration began work on the Learners' Perceptions Survey, a systematic effort to create an instrument that would measure the satisfaction of the 80,000 individuals who have a clinical training experience each year at VA medical facilities. This paper traces the history of the development of the instrument from the extensive literature review, through a series of focus groups held with faculty/preceptors and students/trainees in a broad spectrum of heath care fields, to a pilot test at 22 facilities, and the first system-wide administration. Even though the instrument had undergone numerous changes and drafts, a factor analysis of the determinants of satisfaction with clinical training using data from the 2001 survey reproduced the original domains that were developed in the literature review.
