Abstract:

Industrialized countries produce subannual statistics on retail trade sales. These are among the most commonly used figures to measure consumer expenditures on a subannual basis. Traditionally, retail sales are measured and disseminated according to the industrial classification of the stores. However, can the industrial classification of a store be used as a proxy for the commodities sold in the stores? The growth of large format stores is altering the commodity mix sold in many retail industries. For example, some supermarkets in Canada have become "main street in a box." Canada has decided to monitor, on a monthly and a quarterly basis, more than 100 groups of commodities sold by retailers. Two surveys are used for this purpose, namely the Monthly Survey of Large Retailers and the Quarterly Retail Commodity Survey. This paper will describe the two surveys as well as provide some illustrations of the findings.
