Abstract:

As surveys of greater complexity are converted to or developed for computer-assisted administration, constructing a quality computerized instrument is increasingly a sophisticated task of software engineering. This talk builds from a presentation delivered at a National Research Council workshop on survey automation. It describes the importance of basic organizational principles--including product-line architecture and incremental development--in building quality software and how those principles might be applied in the computer-assisted survey context.
