Abstract:

At JSM 2000 the authors outlined a proposal for an undergraduate major in statistics in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at James Madison University. The proposal was recently passed by the university and the degree program will go into effect in the fall 2003 semester. In this paper, the curriculum for the new major will be outlined and compared to the original proposed major and ASA guidelines. An account is given of the development of the curriculum by the statistics faculty, including the decision to use a two-track system and reasons why certain courses were include or not included. This paper should be of interest to other departments, in particular, mathematics and statistics departments who are contemplating proposing a statistics major.
