Abstract:

In plant pathology, group testing has been widely used in vector-transfer designs to study factors affecting the spread of viral diseases by insect vectors. In such contexts, vectors are tested in groups rather than individually. However, the goal is still to estimate the probability of disease transmission by a single vector. The purpose of this article is to propose new confidence interval procedures for this probability. We derive an asymptotic interval based on the variance stabilizing transformation of the maximum likelihood estimator and present several approaches using the bootstrap. These intervals are shown to often have better coverage properties and similar mean lengths to those methods already available. Furthermore, the proposed intervals are guaranteed to produce endpoints within the parameter space. We illustrate our methods using data from an Argentinean study involving the "Mal Rio Cuarto" virus.
