Abstract:

First statistics courses require one or more entry-level prerequisite mathematics courses. Statisticians have articulated a set of goals for these prerequisite courses, such as learner-centered instruction, written and oral communication of results, the use of real, engaging applications through which students can draw connections between the language of mathematics and the context of application, and the use of appropriate technology to solve problems. Mathematics instructors often argue that the entry-level courses cannot be enhanced to include these goals without a significant sacrifice of nonstatistics content. We describe in this paper an interdisciplinary NSF-sponsored course, Mathematics in Action, which maintains the core topics of a traditional course but still achieves the goals set out by statisticians. The course covers core topics but also provides students with hands-on, real-world projects. These projects emphasize the use of actual data and illustrate the power of finite mathematics and statistical tools in solving actual business and social problems. Students develop skills in mathematics, statistics, technology, teamwork, data gathering, and communications.
