Abstract:

Biotechnology, and genomics in particular, are using data mining techniques to identify links between genes and diseases. Consulting in this area requires both statistical and data mining expertise. An overview and several examples from consulting and research are presented. There is a large overlap between statistical techniques and data mining methodology and the similarities and differences are highlighted as well as the fundamental assumptions being made. Pitfalls of some data mining projects and the lessons learned are also outlined.
