Abstract #300035

This is the preliminary program for the 2003 Joint Statistical Meetings in San Francisco, California. Currently included in this program is the "technical" program, schedule of invited, topic contributed, regular contributed and poster sessions; Continuing Education courses (August 2-5, 2003); and Committee and Business Meetings. This on-line program will be updated frequently to reflect the most current revisions.

Title: Using Visualization to Provide Context and Focus Within and Among Bioinformatics Datasets
Author(s): Jeffrey D. Saffer*+

Address: Two Clock Tower Place, Suite 600, Maynard, MA, 01754,
Keywords: bioinformatics ; visualization ; analytical integration
Abstract:

There are many methods for classification and categorization of data records. These approaches lead to organization of the data, often in the form of groups or clusters of records. To propel these analyses to knowledge discovery, additional technologies must be applied--foremost of which is data visualization. In the bioinformatics realm, graphics take on an even greater significance because the information is usually complex, often unstructured, and spans multiple data types. Visualization of bioinformatics data, spanning sequence analysis through experimental results to the scientific literature, will be discussed. Specific attention will be paid to how visualizations can provide context and focus to an analytical integration and thus lead to obtaining knowledge from the data.
