Title: Developing Statistical Concepts with a Binomial Project

Abstract:

Students are required to conduct two probability experiments. Each student identifies a probability tool (e.g. coins, dice, cards, or candies of various colors). Then a high-probability (HP) experiment and a low-probability (LP) experiment are defined using the tool. The HP must have a probability of success between 55% and 75%. The LP probability of success must be between 15% and 25%. Each trial consists of 30 events and there are 40 trials for each of the two experiments. The student's report includes a comparative listing of the frequency distributions, two comparative graphical displays (line plot or histogram, and box plot), numerical statistics (mean, median, standard deviation, and IQR), a verbal comparison of the two distributions, an analysis of the "normality" of the distributions, a hypothesis test on the difference between sample means, and a 95% confidence interval on the mean number of successes for each distribution. Flipping coins or dice 2,400 times is tedious, but students claim that it was worth it. They report that the project provides real insight into distributions, variation, normality, skew, and confidence intervals.
