Abstract:

Moraines are debris left during an ice-age retreat. Newer, more extensive, glacial moraines normally obliterate older glacial moraines. Estimates of the number of major ice-age advances from the existing glacial record were previously given. The number of surviving glacial moraines may be recast as a problem in the number of record values for which there is a substantial statistical literature. Using this connection, for example, the chance of a specified number of surviving glacial moraines can be given (in terms of Stirling numbers of the first kind). The presentation is intended for instructors wishing to have an interesting problem in the sciences to illustrate the method of moment and maximum likelihood estimation techniques. Another is the natural way it can be used to briefly expose students to some results in the area of record values. Material in this talk will be published, perhaps late 2003, as an article in Teaching Statistics with the same title.
