Title: Two-Stage Multiple Comparisons of Treatment Means Under Unequal Variances

Abstract:

Bishop and Dudewicz (1978) developed a two-stage ANOVA method and Chen and Chen (2000) proposed a two-stage range test procedure for testing the equality of population means for unknown and unequal variances. Following the tests, Bishop (1979) and Wilcox (1983) developed Tukey-type simultaneous confidence intervals for a multiple comparisons procedure. By applying the protection level of Duncan (1955), we provide two methods of two-stage multiple range test procedures for pairwise comparisons under unequal variances: Newman-Keuls-type and Duncan-type. The pairwise comparisons procedures are then compared by simulation studies with respect to comparisonwise and experimentwise error rates as well as correct decision rate. The Duncan-type procedure is shown to be more appropriate than the other methods. The tables for applying the Duncan-type procedure and a numerical example to demonstrate the methods are provided.
