Abstract:

We develop effective measures of birth outcomes based on low birth weight and short gestational length, investigate the geographical distribution of these outcomes, and evaluate the use of classification techniques employed to assess risk across racial groups and geographical regions in Florida. Our techniques involve logistic regression, ROC curves, and classification trees. We use ROC curves to evaluate the predictive performance of the trees and bootstrapping to assess the stability of the trees.
