Abstract:

This paper describes an activity for an Introduction to Statistics class that teaches students the concepts of standardization, detecting outliers and assessing normality. The students create the data by inventing their own Olympic "events" which they compete. The students are then asked to analyze the data to answer the following questions: Does the data for each event follow a normal distribution? Are there any outliers? What was the best single performance in all the Olympic "events"? Who was the best overall athlete? And If your "event" was to become a real competition, what score would your require a city/state/national/Olympic athletes to have?
