Abstract #300001

This is the preliminary program for the 2003 Joint Statistical Meetings in San Francisco, California. Currently included in this program is the "technical" program, schedule of invited, topic contributed, regular contributed and poster sessions; Continuing Education courses (August 2-5, 2003); and Committee and Business Meetings. This on-line program will be updated frequently to reflect the most current revisions.

Abstract:

In epidemiological research, two prospective cohort study designs, open and fixed cohorts, can be used to assess the incidence of cancer or other chronic diseases. After a long period of follow-up, attrition rate and increased variance of incidence rate estimation due to a small number of cases in the fixed cohort may induce serious concerns. To improve the precision of incidence rate, we propose permutation approach and direct mathematical derivation to evaluate the probability that the variance of incidence rate among the open cohort is no more than that of the fixed cohort. Results are compared between the two groups based on simulation analyses and a real dataset. The findings are discussed in this paper.
