Description

The energy industry has changed substantially over the past several years. We have seen the deregulation of the wholesale and retail markets for electricity and natural gas. The industry is less vertically integrated than it once was. Gaps in data coverage have emerged in both price and volume, and they are continuing to grow. New players such as energy marketers have entered the market place. They are not familiar with responding to government surveys and are sometimes difficult to identify. Environmental issues are becoming more closely linked to energy issues. Because of all these changes, the number and complexity of questions from Congress and the public have grown, and statisticians working within the field of energy have faced new challenges. This session proposes to describe these changes and challenges and some of the recent developments in energy statistics.
