Abstract:

ColorBrewer is a Flash tool for choosing among and evaluating 35 different map color schemes with 3 to 12 classes each. Schemes are organized into three groups to suit different data characteristics. For example, sequential schemes would suit mapping population data that ranges from low to high densities. Diverging schemes would suit data showing change in population, emphasizing loss, minimal change, and gain. Qualitative schemes would suit maps detailing dominant race groups by region. The ColorBrewer Web tool provides a practical way to apply these beautiful and effective color representations of your own data within the mapping and graphing software tools you use. Colors are specified in CMYK, RGB, Hex, Lab, and HSV (for ArcView 3.x mapping software). Online functionality, export to other software, and application to example mappings of Census 2000 data will be demonstrated. The web tool was developed with an NSF-funded Digital government grant through the GeoVISTA Center at Penn State and is available online at ColorBrewer.org.
