Abstract:

Length biased sampling arises when items are sampled in proportion to their values of a random variable X of interest; e.g., older units are more likely to be sampled simply because they have been in service longer. A difficult problem arises when this variable is not observable, but another random variable Y is observed, and Y is correlated with X, such as item degradation in a periodic inspection program or subclinical disease progression. We discuss related issues and methods of estimating the effects.
