Title: Three "Real" Finance Applications for Introductory Statistics Classes

Abstract:

We present three classroom-tested examples of "real" problems from the field of finance. Using these examples, students can conduct meaningful analysis from real-world data that they obtain themselves. The financial theory under girding the beta coefficient, the security market line, and technical trading is accessible, and provides a fertile arena in which students can meaningfully use statistical concepts that they have learned. These concepts include the arithmetic mean, geometric mean, simple univariate regression, calculation of residuals, and various forms of hypothesis testing. Moreover, the data used to illustrate these concepts are widely available on the Internet, so instructors can easily convey the challenges and issues associated with obtaining, preparing, and manipulating data prior to analysis.
