Abstract:

The 1990 Census questionnaire asked for the age and year of birth of each person in the household. No instructions were given for the respondent to answer the questions in reference to Census Day, April 1, 1990. Thus, some discrepancy resulted between the reported age and the distribution of birthdays. Respondents in the 1990 Census reported their age on average as of May 5, 1990. For Census 2000, the census form included instructions to provide age as of April 1, 2000 and asked for a complete date of birth. This paper will examine the discrepancies between reported age and Census Day, April 1, 2000.
