Abstract:

Everyone has an opinion about what colors they like, but our discussion will take us beyond aesthetic issues to analytical uses of color in symbolization. Effective data representations result from paralleling the structures in your data with the perceptual dimensions of color: hue and lightness. We will talk about general guidelines for using color on maps and graphs and about specific symbolization challenges you have in visualizing a dataset.
