Title: Teaching Practical Applications to Health Services Fellows
Author(s): Margaret Peterson*+
Affiliation(s): Hospital for Special Surgery
Address: 535 East 70th Street, New York, New York, 10021, USA
Keywords: Health Services ; software
Abstract:

This is one of the introductory courses mandatory for Health Services fellows enrolled in the Masters program. The specific aims are to teach them the basics of data entry and checking, examining data, and transferring it between software packages especially statistical packages. It is important that they learn to examine the data before they analyze it. Simple data plots and descriptive statistics are stressed. They are introduced to the fact that a statistical package may not cover every type analysis that they want to do. Since this is an introductory course, there are difficulties due to the fact that we cannot assume too much about the knowledge level of the Fellows in any of the areas of databases, statistics or computer applications.
