Title: The Effect of Long-Duration Modem Calls on Telephone Traffic

Abstract:

Analysis of telephone call data in recent years has revealed a sharp increase in the number of calls with very long holding times. A major source for these long calls is Internet access using dial-up modem connections. In this talk, we will describe some recent data and discuss the effect of long calls on traffic engineering. We show that the classical model for provisioning of circuits becomes highly ineffective in the presence of calls with very long durations, and we describe a model that provides a much better fit to the data. This model allows a better understanding of issues, such as congestion and call blocking that could result from increased dial-up modem use.
