Abstract:

Leslie Kish, past President of the American Statistical Association and co-founder the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research, died October 7, 2000 at the age of 90. His contributions to survey sampling and survey research span a career of more than 50 years. Colleagues and former students will give personal recollections of Kish, including a review of his many technical contributions to survey sampling and survey research, including his promotion of sound probability sampling methods around the world, from developments in variance estimation for complex sample surveys and the design effect, to examinations of coverage and interviewer variance, and practical sampling techniques such as objective respondent selection, allocation in stratified samples for multipurpose surveys, and rolling samples. The session will start with contributions from three panelists, after which there will be time for many contributions from the floor. The session will end with a reception.
