Abstract:

This paper investigates the feasibility of using logistic regression models to examine for an RDD survey the likelihood of determining whether a number belongs to a household and, if the number reaches a household, that the household will complete screening questions and if selected, respond to the questionnaire. Answering machines and other screening services are increasingly being used by households and make the resolution of whether a number identifies a household more challenging. Likewise, obtaining household participation is becoming more difficult. Hence, more effective methods are being sought to adjust for the lower rates of number resolution and response. We examine an RDD sample generated using the Genesys system, using Genesys "telephone-exchange level demographic information in propensity" models to adjust the sampling weights for nonresponse. Propensity models are used to adjust for nonresponse in other contexts, especially in longitudinal surveys. The use of Genesys data, however, focuses on a different set of explanatory variables than used in longitudinal surveys, ones that are readily available for RDD cross-sectional surveys.
