Abstract:

Since late in the nineteenth century, the U.S. government has had the responsibility of managing certain funds on behalf of individual Indians. As a result of a class action lawsuit, the Department of the Interior has been ordered to provide a historical accounting to each Individual Indian Money (IIM) account beneficiary. The information needed for this accounting must be retrieved from different physical locations, and it will be in a variety of forms, both paper and electronic. Statisticians can contribute to this effort by aiding in the assessment of the accuracy of the accounts, assuring that quality data are obtained, and quantifying the results. In this paper, we outline the forensic problem of recovering historical financial data and describe some of the statistical issues that arise.
