Title: Finite-Sample Properties of a Series of Softwares Using the Littlewood Software Reliability Model

Abstract:

This paper considers a system of p softwares connected in a series structure where the failure of a software causes system failure. The failure of each software follows the model proposed by Littlewood (1980), which relies on the residual number of bugs remaining in the software. Each bug produces failures at varying rates, where bugs that are observed earlier in the testing period are assumed to have a higher failure rate. Randomly selected tasks are assigned to the system where the task completion times, as well as the software failure times, are assumed to be independent of each other. After a finite observational period, the system reliability is obtained. This depends on the unknown parameters that govern task completion and software failure times and the number of failures and completions observed at test termination. An estimator of the system reliability is presented, based on the maximum likelihood estimators of the unknown parameters. The finite-sample properties of the system reliability estimator are examined via a simulation study.
