Abstract:

In this paper, regression and analysis of variance techniques are considered to determine the factors which influence goal scoring in European Champions League soccer matches. Based on the first and second round results of the 2001-2002 season, an attempt is made to estimate the effect of certain aspects of the game such as goals conceded, fouls committed, yellow and red cards received, corners won, fouls suffered, offsides, shots on goal and shots wide on the goal scoring of a team, as well as on the accumulation of points. The approach is mainly descriptive, but also predictive over the long run.
