Title: Dynamic Conditioned Choropleth Maps and Hypothesis Generation
Author(s): Daniel Carr*+

Address: 4100 University Ave, Fairfax, Virginia, 22030, US
Keywords: Choropleth Maps ; Java shareware ; Partitioning sliders
Abstract:

The talk describes recently developed shareware called conditioned choropleth (CC) maps. This Java application introduces new sliders that partition the regions to be mapped into subsets based on two explanatory variables. The partitioned regions appear in a two-way layout of panels. An additional partitioning slider controls the color of the regions based values of a dependent variable. The sliders and panels are annotated with statistics. An alternative view, a two-way layout of dynamic QQplots, helps to assess distributional differences across panels. The purpose of the software is to promote sharper hypothesis generation. Differences among panels and patterns within panels beg explanation.

An example relating lung cancer to precipitation and poverty raises issues about data availability and surrogate variables.
