Abstract:

The use of principal components analysis in measuring the capability of a multivariate process was first considered by Wang and Chen (1998,1999). In this paper, extending their initial idea, some indices are proposed that can be used in situations where the specification limits of the multivariate process are unilateral and of the same type (i.e., all of them are either lower limits or upper limits). Moreover, some new indices are defined that assign unequal weights to the univariate indices that correspond to the individual principal components. These weights are based on the portion of the variance explained by the relative principal components.
