Abstract:

The complex structure of longitudinal data with associated discrete covariates requires developing visual methods for a better understanding of underlying structures. In this paper, a simple and flexible method, linked brushing, was studied for such datasets to detect the mean structure, and inferences for data visualization based on permutation tests were attempted. Methods were applied to a random dataset from The Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID), which was first used by Faraway (1999) to illustrate an exploratory method. Comparisons of results with his approach and ours were stated. Results show that our approach is promising as a primary analysis tool in detecting mean structures, unexpected responses, and effect interactions.
