Abstract:
|
This research uses data from the 1992 and 1993 Surveys of Income and Program Participation to compare reported earnings from wages, salaries, and self-employment with amounts recorded in the Social Security Administration's Master Earnings File (MEF) on behalf of the survey respondents. The paper makes extensive use of the MEF's rich, newly available detailed earnings data. Earnings discrepancies are cross-tabulated by key socioeconomic and demographic characteristics. We describe the nature of earnings differences, investigate their likely sources, and identify patterns in the distribution of those differences. In addition, we examine match rates between the two data sources and describe the characteristics of the unmatched subset of the SIPP population.
