Abstract:

The Clean Water Act directs EPA to develop national regulations that limit amounts of pollutants in wastewater discharges from industry sectors. To generate data used in developing the regulations, EPA's Office of Water collects and chemically analyzes wastewater samples from industrial facilities. Review of these data requires a collaborative effort between chemists, biologists, engineers, and statisticians. This presentation describes this collaborative approach to ensuring data quality and describing the data. Chemists and biologists review the results for adherence to quality control and assurance requirements. Engineers assess whether the results are consistent with the industrial processes and expected performance of wastewater treatment systems. Statisticians analyze anomalies, patterns, and interrelationships in the data. Because these data are used in regulatory activities, documentation is critical for public review and comment on data collection, chemical analysis, and technical reviews supporting the regulations. Generating this documentation also requires a collaborative effort between the disciplines.
