Abstract:

Socioeconomic, environmental, and health care differences may be expected to result in life expectancy variation among counties. However, calculation of county life tables is difficult, especially when the counties are small in population size. This predicament stems from the fact that even when detailed data are available, the number of deaths in many age-sex groups is very small and subject to random variation.

This paper suggests a solution to this problem by initially applying state level survival rates to the population of any county at the beginning of a decade to estimate deaths by age and sex over a ten-year period. The ratio of the total number of actual deaths to the total number of estimated deaths is then used as a correction factor to adjust the estimated distribution of deaths and calibrate survival rates and the mid-decade life table for that county. Illustrative examples based on Wisconsin data show how the procedure works.
