Abstract:

Multivariate capability indices are examined as a diagnostic for process quality improvement. A number of multivariate capability indices have been proposed, but the literature does not suggest a method for measuring quality characteristics in a way that links shift patterns directly to their causes. Multivariate capability indices using a process-oriented basis representation allows the computation of cause-related index values. The method uses regression coefficients as process-oriented data. When causes operate independently, the process-oriented approach simplifies yield-based capability calculations. A screen printing example demonstrates the efficiency and effectiveness of the new process-oriented capability method. Computational results produced capability estimates with 8% to 25% of the error of an existing yield-based method. We also propose a new extension to a current multivariate capability method to improve the accuracy of its index computations.
