Abstract:

Recent software packages for power and sample size calculations have eased the burden of performing power analyses for protocol development and grant applications. While commercial software has made these methodologies more assessible, other aspects of preparing a successful statistical section for a grant are more elusive, especially for junior biostatisticians. Some practical guidelines are offered for tasks involved in preparing the statistical section of a grant application. The importance of linking of specific aims to proposed statistical methods, negotiating for space within the grant, early and regular access to the principal investigator, and budget items are discussed. Suggestions for obtaining preliminary data, citing journal articles in the literature, and defending the robustness of the proposed sample size are given.
