Abstract:

An important and sometimes controversial issue in airline safety is the aging of aircraft in the carrier fleet. It is expected that mechanical systems degenerate with age and use, but periodic repair is intended to maintain aircraft at a reliable functioning level. In this paper, the schedule reliability of aircraft in North America is analyzed from records on unscheduled landings. The hazard rate is modelled from data on time between events. The rate is related to age of aircraft, time since last repair, aircraft model, and carrier.
