Abstract:

In spite of its common practical application, some investigators find the Cochran-Armitage trend test restrictive; this test is most powerful against alternatives in which the log-odds of success increase or decrease linearly. Agresti and Coull (1996, Biom 52, 1103-1111) propose an order-restricted test for several binomials that does not rely on this functional form. However, while they suggest an exact conditional test, they rely on Monte Carlo sampling to approximate the p-value for this test. We use a network algorithm to obtain the exact conditional distribution of the statistic proposed by Agresti and Coull. We further demonstrate how the network approach allows efficient computation of weights needed for the asymptotic distribution of this statistic.
