Abstract:

Repeated neuropsychological measurements are frequently used in Alzheimer's disease (AD) research in order to study change in cognitive function of AD patients. A question of interest among dementia researchers is whether some AD patients exhibit transitory "plateaus" of cognitive function in the course of the disease. We consider a statistical approach to this question, based on unbalanced and irregularly-spaced repeated neuropsychological measurements. Main statistical tasks are used to define an algorithm for the measurement of a cognitive plateau and to test the existence of plateaus in AD using results from this algorithm. In this talk, an algorithm is proposed and a randomization test based on simulating data sets from a linear mixed model will be described. The proposed method is applied to a longitudinal data set from the Michigan Alzheimer's Disease Research Center.
