Abstract:

Combining elements from hazard modelling, logistic regression, multilevel analysis, and non-linear mixed models, we propose to use adaptive Gaussian Quadrature in estimating discrete-time multilevel hazard models to assess the impact of societal and individual level covariates on the timing and occurrence of life-course events. We explore the use of this modelling strategy to empirically assess whether--and if so, how, and why--the impact of the mother's educational level varies among fifteen European countries.

In this analysis, human capital accumulation theory has not been falsified: The effect of education showed to be negative and no cross-level interactions were found.
