Abstract:

Most statistical data sets "spring into life" as Excel sheets, and Excel offers nice facilitities to manipulate data and to do simple statistical analyses and graphics. In MS-Windows, R can be embedded into may different applications, including Excel. We will discuss different models of embedding R into Excel and show that the embedding mechanism can be very useful for different user groups, as ,e.g., naive users, advanced users, and statistical method developers. We will also investigae implementation issues like the completely different user interaction paradigm (R as a programming language, Excel as a direct manipulation software package) and discuss ways of itegrating these different paradigms.
