Abstract:

In clinical trials, marker processes are often available for each subject--for example, CD4 counts for AIDS patients. During the trial, subject may initiate a new non-randomized therapy. Often the decision to initiate the new therapy is based on the history of the markers. This situation is discussed by a series of papers by James Robins and his colleagues. They assumed that the decision for each subject is independent of each other. However, if subjects in the trial are treated by different physicians or in different medical centers, then these physicians or centers may have different criteria to make that decision. That is to say, subjects treated by the same physicain (or in the same medical center) are correlated, rather than independent, with regard to this decision making. We discuss the analysis issue in this situation.
