Abstract:

Although knowledge of intracluster correlation coefficient (rho) would be very useful in designing surveys, its usage is limited to mainly one-stage cluster sampling. This is so since expression for the variance cannot be easily written in terms of rho. These expressions are given in terms of delta, when the same sampling fraction is used in each PSU in textbooks such as, Hansen, Hurwitz, and Madow (1953). This paper derives such expressions for some sampling strategies and expounds on the usefulness of knowledge of the intracluster correlation coefficient.
