Abstract:

The United States Census Bureau maintains time series of monthly sales and inventory estimates for retail and wholesale industries. Until recently, the data for these series were based on the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) System. With the release of results from the April 2001 monthly surveys, the Census Bureau began publishing monthly estimates based on the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). The first releases also included NAICS-based time series for the period from January 1992 forward. This paper discusses the methods used to develop the historical NAICS time series. The discussion addresses changes to initial plans, including the development of a NAICS series for quarterly retail electronic-commerce sales estimates. The paper concludes with a summary of issues that have surfaced since the first release of the monthly NAICS estimates.
