Abstract:

One major obstacle to teaching statistics is not knowing your audience. The adage "don't tell me about your seed, tell me about my lawn" is sound advice to a statistician presenting an overview of statistics. This ASA presentation provides a case study of a seminar series tailored to the needs of non-statisticians working in the anti-viral area of a pharmaceutical company. Based on a needs assessment, the statisticians presented statistically, clinically relevant material from the perspective of the clinicians. The goal was to show that knowing the audience and using examples from their work would improve their comprehension of statistics and consultation with statisticians. An evaluation was used to measure our degree of success.
