Abstract:

Computerized adaptive tests (CAT) commonly use recursive maximum likelihood estimation (R-MLE) as item selection method. The R-MLE method, however, has its limitations. For instance, it requires a lengthy calculation. As an alternative, the up-and-down method is used to select items. An asymptotic analysis on the maximum likelihood estimate of ability of the examinee will be reported. Although the resulting estimate is less efficient than R-MLE, we use a simulation study to illustrate that the efficiency loss can be quite small in moderate number of test items.
