Abstract:

Most statistical research activities, particularly data analysis and communication, involve some form of computer use. This puts the computer and its user interface in the central role of facilitating statistical tasks. Emacs Speaks Statistics (ESS) is a software package that was designed to provide a multi-platform, multi-package intelligent environment for statistical analysis. This paper is meant to introduce the audience to the power and convenience of ESS.

ESS provides an interface to statistical analysis packages, and provides, through Emacs, additional tools which facilitate both statistical software development and data analysis. ESS currently supports the S family of languages (S, S-plus, and R); SAS; BUGS; Stata; and XLispStat, and its extensions Arc and ViSta. Both ESS and Emacs are open-source, free-software. Internet addresses will be provided so ESS, and Emacs can be obtained. A mailing list where ESS help can be found will also be discussed.
