Abstract:

Issues concerning the design and analysis of multi-treatment equivalence trials have received recent attention in the statistical literature. These works are carefully reviewed, with emphasis placed on practical design and analysis considerations. We will concentrate on trials that do not contain a control treatment. Topics considered include issues involved in choosing a null hypothesis, methodology for sample size determination, type I error and multiplicity considerations, and the handling of cases with unequal variances. A number of multi-treatment equivalence testing procedures are critically considered, with recommendations made. Practical examples are provided to illustrate concepts.
