Abstract:

We have developed a model for teaching mathematical statistics using detailed case studies. Although we advocate using real data in our theoretical courses, we have encountered many challenges along the way. For example, we faced the following questions: What makes a good case study? Where can we find good case studies? How can we connect data analysis to theoretical statistics, and how can we effectively use statistical software to foster this connection? We will discuss some of our ideas for answering these questions, and we will demonstrate a new approach to using statistical software in the mathematical statistics course.
