Abstract:

Quantitative literacy (QL) is naturally an area of interest to statisticians and has recently become of increasing interest to mathematicians and mathematics educators. The recent publication Mathematics and Democracy: The Case for Quantitative Literacy of the National Council on Education and the Disciplines (NCED) includes a case statement and responses concerning the importance of QL to society. Later this year NCED will publish two more volumes on QL, growing out of a December 2001 Forum at the National Academy of Sciences. This panel discussion will address the role of statistics in QL, the status of the current QL movement, and what statisticians can do to promote the agenda of quantitative literacy. The statistics education community is well-positioned to contribute to the QL movement; our courses, both conceptual and methodological, impact large numbers of undergraduate and graduate students. Panel members include representatives of NCED, Mathematical Association of America, and the ASA's Section on Statistical Education.
