Abstract:

Mixed effect models have been widely used for the analysis of longitudinal data or other repeated measures. In this talk, we discuss an approach to the nonparametric estimation of mixed effect models. We treat the variance components through "mean components", and apply the standard cross-validation methods to estimate the nonparametric fixed effects and the parametric random effects. Our asymptotic analysis shows that the method minimizes the natural losses, whether the random effects are "real" or just "latent," and the theoretical analysis is confirmed by numerical simulations.
